The German “buzz bomb,” officially known as the V-1 flying bomb, was an early cruise missile developed by Nazi Germany during World War II. Its official designation was Fieseler Fi 103, and it was also referred to as the “Vengeance Weapon 1” (Vergeltungswaffe 1) by the Germans2.
The V-1 was designed to terrorize the British public by launching a series of attacks on London and other targets. It was equipped with a pulse-jet engine that produced a distinctive buzzing noise, which is how it got its nickname. The bomb had a range of about 250 kilometers (160 miles) and could reach speeds of up to 640 kilometers per hour (400 miles per hour)1.
The V-1 was launched from catapult ramps or sometimes from aircraft, and it carried an 850-kilogram (1,870-pound) explosive warhead. The first V-1s were launched against London on June 13, 1944, and they continued to be used until the last launch site was overrun by Allied forces in March 19451.
