Photo’s Custom Exhaust
Building a custom exhaust for a 1978 Honda Civic (first-generation 1200) requires a custom-fabricated or universal-adaptable setup, sizing piping to 1.75 or 2 inches, and selecting a vintage-appropriate turbo or glasspack muffler. Because direct bolt-on aftermarket kits do not exist for first-gen Civics, fabrication by an exhaust shop or DIY welding is required.
Key Fabrication SpecsPiping Diameter: 1.75-inch to 2.0-inch outer diameter is ideal to maintain proper backpressure and low-end torque for the small displacement 1.2L or 1.5L CVCC four-cylinder engine. Going larger (like 2.5 inches) will hurt performance and sound overly raspy.
Routing: Single-exit rear setup mirroring the factory passenger-side or driver-side exit, carefully routed over the compact rear beam axle. Component Selection Header / Manifold: Rare vintage aftermarket headers (such as old-school Douglas or Pacesetter units if found used) or modifying the stock exhaust manifold flange.
Resonator: A small 12-to-18-inch glasspack or straight-through resonator is necessary to eliminate the aggressive metallic drone typical of CVCC engines.
Muffler: Compact universal retro mufflers (like a MagnaFlow straight-through or turbo-style oval muffler) to keep the tone deep rather than buzzy.
